The main goal of SPIRIT – Stara Planina – Inspiration for Rural and Intercultural Tourism project is to develop ideas for tourism based on the unique features of the border region and the intercultural links between the two border regions directly linked to the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina) – Nish and Montana.
New Culture Foundation team has made a research and mapping of the human and natural resources in the Northwest part of the Balkan Mountains. A research team led by Mariana Assenova explored the unique characteristics, food and cultural calendar of three municipalities – Varshets, Berkovitsa and Chiprovtsi. Two artistic 10 days long “workshops” for students and young people were organized. Children from the Municipal children’s complex in Varshets and from the family-type accommodation center in Berkovitsa, led by two artists from Serbia and two from Bulgaria, together explore the history, traditions and present of the town of Varshets and choose the most attractive tourist routes. By the end of the second workshop, the children present a show-performance “Walking in my shoes” (link: gallery // video // Performance) as part of the annual summer celebration in Varshets.
The results of the mapping of resources and artistic research are presented in the guide “Walking in my shoes”, tailor-made tourism and in the documentary of the same name.
The SPIRIT project is funded under the Bulgaria-Serbia Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance Cross-Border Programme.
